Doors and cabinets
Align a rubbing cabinet door with adjustable concealed hinges
Read the door gaps and make small, reversible adjustments. Loose fixings or a moving cabinet need a different repair.
Is this guide for your item?
Small cabinet doors with identified adjustable concealed hinges, sound fixings and matching instructions. Excludes heavy, glass, folding, lift-up and spring-loaded doors.
Start with what you observe
- The side gap is narrow or tapered
- Side adjustment may change clearance or tilt. Identify whether the top, bottom or whole edge needs moving.
- The whole door sits too high or low
- Check the documented height adjustment. A cam and a loosen-slide-retighten mounting plate need different handling.
- The front protrudes or rubs while closing
- Remove obstructing contents first. Depth adjustment may help, but cannot repair a warped panel or damaged hinge.
What you’ll need
- The hinge or cabinet manufacturer's adjustment diagram
- A hand screwdriver with the exact fitting tip
- A ruler
- A phone or paper for recording the starting gaps
- A helper if the documented adjustment needs the door supported
Before you start
Match the hinge markings and mounting plate to the instructions. Screws may secure, release or adjust different parts; appearance alone does not identify their function.
The cabinet must be stable and secured as designed. Rocking, wall separation, swollen panels or torn-out screw holes mean stop using the affected door and arrange repair.
Step by step
Record the problem with the door nearly closed
Close slowly to just before rubbing. Compare every edge with the cabinet and neighboring door. Photograph the front and write one goal, such as moving the upper free corner away from its neighbor. Do not adjust both doors at once.
Schematic illustration · Not a model-specific service diagram.Movement axes, not screw locations. Match your hinge and mounting-plate diagram. Distinguish an adjustment from a loose attachment
Support the door and inspect where its hinges attach. Tighten an identified loose mounting screw only as the instructions allow. Stop if it spins without gripping, the panel crumbles, or the hinge is cracked or bent. Alignment cannot restore a damaged fixing.
Choose one axis and its documented screw
Find side, height or depth adjustment in the model diagram. Blum CLIP top has separate side and depth controls, but height adjustment depends on its mounting plate. Another hinge may differ. Leave release clips and damping switches alone.
Make one small, reversible change
Use a hand screwdriver, not a drill. Turn a cam adjustment a small amount within its specified range. Record the hinge and direction, close gently and compare. If movement is wrong, undo that turn before trying the opposite direction.
Support the door for sliding adjustments
If the instructions require loosening mounting screws, have a helper support the door first. Loosen only the specified screws enough to slide within the allowed range; never remove them. Retighten before releasing support. If safe support is impractical, use an installer.
Balance the result and test a full swing
Moving hinges similarly can shift the whole door; unequal changes can alter its angle. Recheck all edges after each small adjustment. Finish with a slow full opening and closing, checking clearance against the frame, adjacent doors and handles.
If it’s not working
One gap improves but another worsens
Undo the last change. Compare the whole outline with your photo; distinguish shifting the door from changing its tilt.
The adjustment reaches its limit
Stop. A different mounting position or cabinet correction may be needed. Do not force cams, bend hinges or enlarge holes.
It lines up but will not close
Check contact points and restore the previous setting if you caused binding. Do not disable soft-close hardware to conceal it.
The door quickly sags again
Inspect the attachment points. Repeated adjustment cannot repair stripped fixings or damaged panels.
Check your result
- The door opens and closes without rubbing or forcing.
- Its visible gaps are reasonably consistent with the cabinet design.
- Every loosened mounting screw has been secured, and no hinge or plate moves at its attachment.
Where this guide stops
- This guide does not remove doors, repair screw holes, straighten warped panels or alter cabinet anchoring.
- Do not adjust a door above a safe working height or continue with damaged fixings.
