Fold towels into a stack that fits your shelf

Make a repeatable rectangular fold, adjust it to your storage space, and keep the pile usable. Start with one towel as a sample before folding the rest.

What you’ll need

• A clean, completely dry towel
• A clear table or bed
• The shelf or drawer where the towel will go

Before you start

This is a storage method, not a washing method. If the towel is damp, leave it unfolded to finish drying according to its care label. Folding cannot remove an odor or dry the layers inside a stack.

Choose an easy-to-reach space. Look at its depth and the clearance above it. The goal is a towel you can put away and retrieve comfortably, not a perfectly square display.

Step by step

1. Make one flat starting rectangle

   Spread the towel with its long edges running left to right. Smooth the fabric with your hands and line up the corners. If one edge is curled underneath, lift that edge and lay it flat before making the first fold.

2. Bring the long edges inward

   Fold the long edge nearest you about one-third of the way across the towel. Fold the far long edge over that section. You now have a long, narrow strip. Keep the layers relaxed rather than stretching one layer to meet another.

3. Shorten the strip

   Bring one short end to the other to fold the strip in half. Smooth it again, then fold it in half once more for a compact bundle. Keep the folded edges together so the finished towel does not fan open when you lift it.

4. Test the sample in its actual space

   Set this single towel on the shelf or inside the drawer. Close the door or drawer gently without compressing it. If the bundle is too deep or tall, reopen the last fold and try thirds instead. Different towel sizes may need different final folds.

5. Repeat a useful size, not an exact measurement

   Place the successful sample nearby as a visual reference. Fold the other towels to a similar footprint, grouping bath towels and hand towels separately. A smaller towel does not need extra layers just to imitate the height of a larger one.

6. Leave the stack easy to use

   Store the towels with their closed folds facing outward. Keep the pile low enough that you can lift a towel without dragging several with it. Give frequently used towels an accessible place; a simple shelf label can help everyone return them to the same spot.

If it’s not working

The stack leans or falls apart

Compare the towels' footprints. Refold any wider bundle, separate different sizes, or split one tall pile into two shorter ones. Do not keep pressing down a stack that is already too crowded.

The bundle springs open

Check whether a thick hem is caught inside a fold. Reopen that fold, smooth the hem, and try a larger finished rectangle with fewer layers.

A stored towel smells musty

Take it out of the stack and follow its washing and drying instructions. Do not hide the smell with fragrance or put it back while it is still damp.

Check your result

• The towel fits without forcing the door or drawer.
• You can remove one towel without toppling the pile.
• Every towel is dry before storage.
