Fold a fitted sheet without fighting the elastic

Nest the four corner pockets, turn the loose edges into a rectangle, then fold to fit your shelf. A neat, manageable bundle is enough; it does not need to look ironed.

What you’ll need

• One clean, completely dry fitted sheet
• A clear bed or large table
• Optional: a shelf label showing the bed size

Before you start

Find the four sewn corner pockets before you begin. The points where the corner seams meet are easier to match than the stretchy outer edge. Work on a flat surface if holding the whole sheet is awkward.

Put aside other bedding while learning the fold. Handling one sheet makes it easier to see whether a corner belongs to the near or far end. Do not stretch the elastic to force the fabric into a square.

Step by step

1. Pair the corners at one end

   Choose two adjacent corners at the same end of the sheet. Slip a hand into each corner pocket, bring the pockets together, and turn one over the other so they nest. Match the sewn points inside the pockets, not just the elastic edges.

2. Pair the remaining corners

   Rest the first pair on the bed. Follow the side edges to find the two remaining corners and nest those together in the same way. You should now have two pairs of corner pockets rather than four separate corners.

3. Bring both pairs together

   Place one pair inside the other, aligning the seam points. All four corners should now sit together. If the middle of the sheet twists, pause and trace the edges again; a diagonal pairing is easier to correct now than after the final folds.

4. Give the sheet straight outer edges

   Lay the layered sheet on the bed or table. Smooth from the corner stack outward. Fold the elasticated edges inward so they sit inside the outline. Treat the remaining shape as a rectangle; a little uneven fabric inside is normal.

5. Fold the rectangle to your shelf size

   Fold the long shape into thirds or halves, smoothing between folds. Then shorten it with another fold. Use the space where it will be stored as your guide. Stop before the bundle becomes too thick to handle comfortably.

6. Store an identifiable set

   Place the fitted sheet with its matching flat sheet and pillowcases, if you use them. Keep different bed sizes in separate groups or label the shelf. A readable size label is more useful than reopening every bundle to find its care tag.

If it’s not working

The sheet becomes a twisted rope

Open it back to the two-pair stage. Trace each side to confirm you paired neighboring corners, not opposite diagonal corners, then nest the pairs again.

One corner makes a large lump

Reopen the corner stack and line up the seam points. Deep-pocket sheets leave more fabric around the edge; distribute that fabric before folding the rectangle.

The finished bundle is not perfectly square

Check whether it fits and stays together. If it does, the fold is useful. Otherwise reopen only the last fold and change its width instead of starting everything again.

Check your result

• The four corner pockets are nested together.
• No loose elastic edge trails out of the bundle.
• The dry sheet fits its storage space and its bed size is easy to identify.
